Divine Liturgy 10:00 am.
February 12,
2012
Our
Vision: To be a
strong and vibrant community enabling parishioners to live the fullness of
the Orthodox faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, "as servants of
Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God." (1 Cor. 4:1)
Our
Mission: To
teach, assist, and provide the environment for stewards to live the message of
our Lord Jesus Christ in their daily lives through worship, witness, outreach, stewardship ,service, education and fellowship.
Sunday of the Prodigal Son. Tone two.
Synaxis of the Three
Hierarchs: St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John
Chrysostom. Hieromartyr Hippolytus, pope of Rome, and with him
Martyrs Censorinus, Sabinus,
Ares, the Virgin Chryse, Martyrs Felix and Maximus whom we commemorate today.
THE HOLY EPISTLE ACCORDING TO:
I Cor.6:12-20 ( page 385)
THE HOLY GOSPEL
ACCORDING TO : Luke 15:11-32 (page 179-180) Tone 2
TROPARION:
When thou didst go down to death, O
Deathless Life, then was hell harrowed by the dazzling light of the Divinity:
When from the lower regions thou didst raise up the dead, then all the hosts of
heaven cried aloud: “O Christ our God, Thou Giver of life, glory to Thee. “
GLORY TO THE FATHER AND TO THE SON AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.
KONTAKION: Thou hast risen from the tomb, O all-powerful Saviour, and at this wondrous sight, hell was struck
with fear, and the dead rose. The creation also rejoices in Thee and Adam is
exceeding glad and the world, O my Saviour, sings Thy
praises for ever.
The
Prodigal Son, Kontakion, Tone III —
Having
foolishly abandoned Thy paternal glory, I have squandered on vices the wealth
Thou gavest me. Therefore I cry to Thee, O
compassionate Father, receive me who repent, and treat me as one of Thy hired
servants.

WE
OWE EVERYTHING TO GOD ---- I have
recklessly forgotten Your glory, O Father; and among
sinners I have scattered the riches which You had given me. Therefore, I cry to
You like the Prodigal: “I have sinned before You, O
compassionate Father; receive me a penitent and make me as one of Your hired
servants.” Kontakion from the Sunday of the Prodigal
Son
This
Sunday, the Gospel reading focuses on the Prodigal Son's return to his father. The Holy Fathers have said that if this were the only
Scripture to survive, it would fully represent the love that God, as our
Father, has for us. The question we must reflect upon
is are we good and faithful Stewards with what God has given us? Do we squander
all that He provides or do we take responsibility for how we use our Time,
Talents and Treasures?
As we contemplate our personal return to God
through Great Lent, will we take the time to reflect on our Stewardship? God
loves us and will continue to take care of us,
however, we have to be responsible in all that we do. As our Church represents
the love that God has for us and through the death of His Son, forgiveness for
our sins, what explanation would we ever need when asked to support our Church?
Stewardship is the way that we can return our love to God, and be thankful for
all that He continues to do.
Dear Stewards of
the Church:
Most of you are
aware that the Church’s Fiscal year begins October 1, 2011 and ends September
30, 2012. Our Pledge Drive 2012 Kickoff was on September 27, 2011
and we were very grateful and pleased with your commitment and cooperation by
submitting your pledges at that time.
Now is the time once again to remind those who have not as yet completed
their pledge cards to please do so and either send them or bring them to the
Tutor’s Office at your very earliest convenience. It is important that the office receives YOUR
PLEDGE CARDS AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please know that PLEDGING does not automatically RENEW
itself; one must complete A PLEDGE CARD EACH NEW YEAR and submit it to
the Tutor’s Office in order for the stewardship program to work successfully. FATHER

CHARITY MONTH - FEBRUARY 2012
St. Sava School of Theology,
Libertyville IL
St. Sava School of Theology is, of
course, named in memory of St. Sava, the first archbishop, teacher and
enlightener of the Serbian people. We recently joined our Church School students
in observing St. Sava's Day and it is fitting that we also offer support to the
theological seminary in the United States named for him. The main mission and goal of St. Sava
School of Theology is to provide religious education and train candidates
for the Holy Priesthood in the Serbian Orthodox Church specifically as well as
interested Orthodox Christian individuals of other ethnic jurisdictions. St. Sava School is the educational center for
individuals committed to serving the Serbian Orthodox Church and her people in
a multi-lingual environment. The school
presently offers study leading to the Bachelor of Divinity Degree. Graduate level programs of study are also
being developed at the School and in conjunction with other institutions. St. Sava School is intended to be a small one
of high quality with a specialized program for students interested in the
priesthood, and/or for preparation for advanced studies in Orthodox Christian
Theology. Funding is provided by an
annual budget proposed by the School and adopted and implemented by the Central
Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States and Canada. Financial support is sought from all the
Serbian Orthodox Dioceses and church congregations. We at St. Nicholas Church are pleased to
support the mission and program of St. Sava School especially in its important
formative years. More information about
the School's programs, plans, and course of study may be found at the diocesan
website at the following link: http://www.serborth.org/education.html

magnificent photos & informative text.
Don’t miss the chance to have your own copy.
SERBIAN SPRUCE TREE
BEAUTIFICATION/MEMORIAL PROJECT
You may have noticed eight new
additions to the Church grounds. We have planted eight Serbian Spruce trees –
four on each side of the church building.
This has been done by approval of the Church Board to enhance the beauty
of the Church campus; as a commitment to protect the environment, and as a way
to honor the Serbian cultural heritage.
The trees are about seven feet tall now, but over the years can grow to
be fifty feet tall and 20 feet in diameter.
Each of us now has an opportunity to
participate in this endeavor by purchasing a share of the Serbian Spruce Tree
Memorial project.
Your commitment of just $200.00 to the Capitol Campaign, will buy a
share of the trees. Everyone buying a
share will eventually have their family name added to some type of a memorial
that will be placed in a visible church location.
If you would like to make a donation
and buy a share of this project, please see Mike Healy, or anyone on the Church
Board.
If you are interested in learning more about Serbian Spruce trees you
can Google “Serbian Spruce Tree” for multiple articles. Thanks for your commitment to our culture and
helping to enhance the Church grounds.

Dear Reverend Fathers, Below is a letter I sent to The Patriot-News in Harrisburg.
I hope it is publlshed. I personally l know The
Editor, David Newhouse. - that might help a bit. This is a hot topic!
One similar to it should be sent to
the key newspapers in Lancaster, Carlisle, Lebanon, Reading ,
York, Chambersburg, Pottsville. You can quote from the main letter issued by the
Office of the Secretariat. Go to the
Assembly Web Site: www.assemblyofbishops.org. That complete letter should be included in your Sunday
bulletins as it was done by Father Stephen Vernak at
Christ The Saviour Church
last Sunday.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
It is interesting to note, but not at
all surprising, that in a letter dated February 2, 2012, the Assembly of
Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America, which is comprised of
the 65 canonical Orthodox bishops in the United States, Canada, and Mexico,
join their voices with the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops and
all those who adamantly protest the recent decision of the United States
Department of Health and Human Services. In this ruling by HHS, religious hospitals, educational
institutions, and other organizations will be required to pay for the full cost
of contraceptives (including some abortion-inducing drugs) and sterilizations for
their employees, regardless of religious convictions of the employers. This Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops
calls upon HHS Secretary Sebelius and the Obama Administration to
rescind this unjust ruling and to respect the religious freedom guaranteed all
Americans by the First Amendment.

FROM THE TRIODION-- PRODIGAL
SON: CANON KONTAKION TONE 3
I HAVE RECKLESSLY FORGOTTEN YOUR
GLORY, O FATHER; AND AMONG SINNERS I HAVE SCATTERED THE RICHES WHICH YOU GAVE
TO ME.] AND NOW I CRY TO YOU AS THE PRODIGAL: I HAVE SINNED BEFORE YOU,
MERCIFUL FATHER;// RECEIVE ME A PENITENT AND MAKE ME
AS ONE OF YOUR HIRED SERVANTS.
IKOS
Every day our Savior teaches us with His own voice: so let us
listen to the Scriptures on the Prodigal Son who regained wisdom, and let us follow
the good example of his repentance with faith, and with humility of heart cry
out to Him who knows all secrets: We
have sinned against You, merciful Father, and are not worthy ever again to be
called Your children as before. But
since by nature You are the Lover of mankind,//
RECEIVE ME A PENITENT AND MAKE ME AS
ONE OF YOUR HIRED SERVANTS.
CANTICLE SEVEN:
IRMOS: THE CHILDREN SANG TOGETHER IN THE FURNACE
AS CHERUBIM IN HEAVEN:
BLESSED ARE YOU, O GOD, FOR IN TRUTH
AND JUDGMENT YOU HAVE BROUGHT ALL THIS UPON US BECAUSE OF OUR SINS,AND YOU ARE PRAISED AND GLORIFIED ABOVE ALL FOREVER!
GLORY TO YOU, OUR GOD, GLORY TO YOU!
I have miserably bowed down to the
pleasures of the body becoming wholly enslaved to the demons that provoke the
passions. I have become a stranger to You, Lover of mankind. But now I cry with
the voice of the Prodigal: I have sinned, O Christ, despise me not, for You alone are merciful. I do not dare look up at the height
of heaven, O King of all: I cry out: I
have sinned; for in my foolishness, I alone have angered You,
rejecting Your commandments. Therefore, only Good One, do not cast
me away from Your presence.
